How to Reserve a Seat on a Greyhound

Taking a trip on Greyhound lets you see the country at ground level. Stops, stations, other passengers and the passing scenery make a Greyhound bus trip through America an intimate way of seeing the country and its people. Reserving a seat is a bit of a misnomer when it comes to Greyhound; seats are given out on a first-come, first-served as you board the bus. However, reserving the ticket and fare for your trip ensures you have a seat when you do board. Greyhound makes several methods of reserving a seat available to customers.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase and reserve your trip online using Greyhound's Web-based reservation and purchase system (see Resources). You'll need a valid credit or debit card. Options for online purchasing include printing out boarding tickets or opting for will-call pickup. If you choose the will-call option, bring a photo ID and the credit or debit card used to purchase the seats when you go to the Greyhound terminal.

Reserve and purchase your Greyhound seat over the telephone. Greyhound offers a toll-free number (800-231-2222) for purchasing and reserving your seat. You'll need a valid credit or debit card when purchasing and reserving over the phone. As with the online option, when you pick up the tickets, you'll need to present the same card used for the phone transaction, and a photo ID.

Go to a Greyhound terminal or office and purchase and reserve your seat in person. Paying in person allows for cash transactions and credit or debit cards. Bring a photo ID for any credit or debit card purchases and reservations.

    • 4

Purchase or reserve passage for someone other than you in two ways: Gift Ticket Orders (GTOS) or Prepaid Ticket Orders (PTOS).

For a GTO, you order the ticket online and the recipient picks it up at the Greyhound terminal she's departing from. She must have picture ID or a password to ensure she's the intended recipient of the gift.

A PTO is similar to a GTO, with the difference being that you must go to a Greyhound location to purchase a ticket for someone else. The recipient then has 10 days to pick up the ticket, and must supply an ID or a password.
