How to Ride a Greyhound Bus Cross-Country

Most Americans have ridden a Greyhound bus at one time or another, usually for short distances between small towns or as financially challenged college students. However, some hardy souls have braved long distance, cross-country Greyhound trips, due to necessity or a sense of adventure.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a good deal. Greyhound occasionally offers special prices on trips in certain segments of the country. Check their website (greyhound.com) for information on sales, advance purchase prices and discounts for military personnel and others.

    • 2

Buy a duffel bag and fill it to the brim. Take plenty of fresh clothes, including T-shirts, jeans and other comfortable clothing suitable for long hours in a bus seat. Be sure to pack plenty of toiletries, including soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo and comb. Pack a light blanket and inflatable pillow to make sleeping in the bus easier.

    • 3

Bring plenty of spending cash. Greyhound buses make food and rest stops regularly, but they usually stop at fast food restaurants adjacent to strip malls. Most places take credit cards, but don't neglect cash just to be safe.

    • 4

Stay connected with family and friends. Bring your cell phone and laptop to pass the time and let family know about delays in arrival times and details about your cross-country adventure.

    • 5

Keep a cross-country trip diary. Use your laptop or an old-fashioned paper journal to list funny and interesting events that occur along the way. You'll meet many colorful characters on your journey. One of them may be sitting next to you.
