How to Evacuate a Bus

Bus evacuations take place when there is a clear and obvious danger to the people riding on the bus. Passengers may need to evacuate if a bus is stalled in traffic and at risk of being hit by an oncoming vehicle, is in danger of going over a ledge, or is on fire or smells of chemicals.

Instructions

    • 1

Remain calm and stay on the bus until the driver gives directions to evacuate. If the driver cannot communicate, use a cell phone to call 911.

    • 2

Locate the emergency exits. Besides the front and rear doors of the bus, there are usually emergency exit windows and may be an emergency exit door at the back of the bus.

    • 3

Follow the driver's instructions and exit the bus as quickly and orderly as possible. Do not talk loudly or stop to take belongings. One passenger should locate and take the first aid kit in case any passengers are injured.

    • 4

Gather in a group several feet away from the bus and check to see if anyone is injured. Wait for the police and other help to arrive. Alert emergency personnel if anyone is injured.
