How to Evacuate a Wheelchair Accessible Bus

If you experience an emergency while riding a bus, you may need to help participate in an evacuation. On a wheelchair accessible bus, there may be a number of riders in wheelchairs that will need help getting off the bus promptly and safely. If a problem has occurred with the bus and the wheelchair lift isn't working, alternate procedures will need to be put in place to get the wheelchairs off the bus without the assistance of the lift.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine whether the wheelchair lift is in operation by pulling the lift lever, usually located at the rear of the bus next to the door. If the lift works, this will be the avenue for evacuating riders with wheelchairs.

    • 2

To move wheelchair-users toward the exit, you will first need to unlock the wheels. Then push each wheelchair toward the back exit of the bus.

    • 3

Roll the wheelchair onto the wheelchair lift and pull the lever. If the lift isn't in operation, pry the back exit door open and have another rider help you lift the wheelchair out the door and onto safe ground. Bus doors can be manually pried open using your hands and a small amount of pressure.

    • 4

Open the front door and instruct all other riders to exit calmly and slowly through either door. Move all wheelchair-users away from the bus to make room for exiting passengers. Be sure all riders are clear of any oncoming traffic.
