How to Use Bus Wheelchair Lifts

Most bus lines provide bus wheelchair lifts to accommodate disabled passengers who are unable to use the steps to board the bus. These people include those confined to wheelchairs, orthopedic strollers, scooters and similar devices in addition to riders who use portable oxygen units, crutches, walkers and canes. Wheelchair lifts have a weight restriction--generally 600 pounds--in addition to width restrictions. You may want to check with your bus service to obtain the bus line restrictions.

Instructions

  1. Entering the Wheelchair Bus Lift

    • 1

Wait until the other passengers are boarded, staying far enough away from the bus to allow the ramp to come down without hitting your mobility device.

    • 2

If you are not obviously disabled, indicate to the driver you will need to use the bus lift or ramp to board.

    • 3

Allow the ramp to fully deploy and wait for the bus driver to indicate to you it is time to move onto the platform. Some wheelchair lifts require that you to back into them, while others require a straight-on approach. Ask the driver how you should enter the ramp.

    • 4

Move onto the lift or ramp and set the brake on your wheelchair, or for those who are standing, hold onto the handrails as the lift ascends. Allow the driver to secure you with any belts or clamps the bus line may use to keep you safe on the ramp while it ascends.

    • 5

Let your bus driver know your destination so he can have you in place when the bus reaches your stop.

    • 6

Pay your fare and move into the area indicated by the bus driver for wheel chairs or other mobility devices. He may use a wheelchair restraint to keep you safely in place. Those on scooters will need to be seated on a regular bus seat--it is unsafe to be seated on a scooter when the bus is in motion.

    Exiting the Wheelchair Lift

    • 7

Notify your driver when your stop is getting near. Usually, the driver will allow the other passengers to board and exit before releasing you from the wheelchair restraints.

    • 8

Enter the ramp or lift and set the brake on your wheelchair or other mobility device. Those who are standing should hold onto the handrails as the lift descends.

    • 9

Wait patiently until the wheelchair lift has fully descended and the safety gate has dropped before leaving the platform.

    • 10

Exit the platform, making sure to be clear of it before it ascends.
