How to Use a Stop Sign on a Bus

Stop signs on a bus are designed to alert traffic when a passenger is being picked up or dropped off. In the case of a school bus, most stops take place close to the passenger's home, so there is no other indication of a designated bus stop other than the stop signs on the bus and flashing red lights. Properly following the rules of the stop sign on a bus ensures safety for both passengers on the bus and traffic on the road.

Instructions

    • 1
Prepare to stop when the yellow lights are flashing.

Prepare to stop when yellow lights are flashing. If the stop signs are not out on the bus but the yellow lights are flashing, this indicates the bus is preparing to stop. The motorist must prepare to stop if he is within a safe distance to do so.

    • 2
Stop at least 20 feet from the bus.

Stop at least 20 feet from the bush when the red lights are flashing and/or the stop signs are out on the bus.

    • 3

Wait for all pedestrians to cross in front of the bus. Watch carefully to ensure all pedestrains are safely out of traffic before proceeding (even if the bus stop sign is in and the lights are no longer flashing).

    • 4

Proceed with caution after the red lights are off, the stop signs are back in and the bus has proceeded.
