How to Make a Multiple Lane Change for a School Bus

Crossing multiple lanes of traffic in a bus requires the driver to pay close attention to the road. A bus needs more room than cars, and some buses tip if jerked around suddenly. Changing into multiple lanes recklessly can cause car accidents. Interstates, highways and wide roads all use multiple lanes, making it necessary for a bus driver to know how to do the process properly. Depending on your state's regulations, you may need to demonstrate this ability when taking the driving test.

Instructions

    • 1

Check all the mirrors to see where other vehicles are in the lane next to the one where the bus is. You need space equal to one-and-a-half bus lengths. Look at the vehicles in front of you. They should be progressing forward, not stopping or slowing down.

    • 2

Turn on the turn signal. Use the signal that reflects the direction you wish to go.

    • 3

Turn the wheel slightly in the direction of the lane you wish to move into. Do not turn the wheel as you do when you make a turn. The idea is to guide the bus into the lane as it moves forward.

    • 4

Straighten out the wheel. Continue keeping a constant speed. Repeat the process to enter the next lane.
