Use stencils and permanent fine-tipped pens or markers to create custom lettering on the leather bus pass holder. One of the simplest lettering ideas is to write your name on it. But ultimately, the message you etch can be entirely of your own creation. If you have good penmanship, or prefer the look of freehand lettering, you can opt not to use a stencil.

Sew edging, borders or patches, onto the surface of your leather bus pass. If the holder is made of a relatively lightweight leather, you won't need anything other than a regular sewing machine, to attach your accessories. Genuine cowhide isn't a great choice for sewing -- as it's typically heavy -- but pigskin and snakeskin are lighter, and lend themselves well to sewn-on alterations.

Paint messages, designs or images onto the surface of your leather bus pass holder. If you want to try painting, be aware that not all types of paint penetrate deeply enough into leather. If you want to paint it, you should begin by cleaning off the surface, using soap and water -- or rubbing alcohol -- to remove waxy or oily finishes. Then, use water-based acrylic paint. Plan to apply multiple coats, allowing each coat to dry fully, before applying the next one.
