How to Get Around Rome Without a Car

Rome has a lot to offer, but getting around may be intimidating. With four rush hours daily, this ancient city is best explored by public transportation, especially if you're going solo. If traveling on self-guided tours, follow these steps for smooth sailing.

Instructions

    • 1

Once you are settled in, talk to the reception desk at the hotel, and find out the fastest way to get to termini. A termini is a train, subway and bus station all in one. Also get directions to your nearest bookstore.

    • 2

Go to the bookstore, and buy a small metro map. Make sure it is current as bus routes change all the time.

    • 3

Buy a pass that works on both the buses and subway trains. Passes are available in tabacchis (bars), vending machines, at metro (subway) stations, or at major bus stops. Passes can be daily, or for up to a week. There are also open top buses. These buses are great if you want to take pictures, but cost a little more and run on a limited route. Tickets for the open top buses are only available at termini. Both of these modes of transportation are safe and will get you anywhere you want to go.

Go back to your hotel, and plan your routes. Nothing screams tourist more than sitting on a bus with a guidebook and subway map trying to figure out where you are going. Write everything down, and carry it with you. Leave the guidebook at home.

Check with your hotel about available tours. Many private tours and walking tours are available. These options are good for those who are staying a short period of time and want to see as much as possible.
