How to Choose a Cabin on Freedom of the Seas

Launched in 2006, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines' Freedom of the Seas was at the time the world's largest purpose-built cruise liner. Departing from Port Canaveral, Florida, the ship continues to cruise to either the Eastern or Western Caribbean on seven-night excursions. During the holiday season, five- and nine-day cruises are also available. The Freedom of the Seas offers many on-board activities, many of them sports-oriented. Pricing for the cruise depends on the date of travel and the location and size of the stateroom. Room choices range from interior rooms with no view to large ocean-view suites.

Instructions

  1. Choose a Cabin by Room Location

    • 1

Study the ship deck maps available on the Royal Caribbean website.

    • 2

Determine the best location for your needs. Travelers who want to be close to the action might choose a room on decks two or three, where there is considerable activity all day. The public areas on these decks house the theater, skating rink, business center, cooking classes, bars, lounges and shops.

    • 3

Evaluate your tolerance for noise. Rooms close to public areas will be noisy during the day; proximity to bars may extend the noise into the night.

    • 4

Look for a room that is under another stateroom, rather than under a public area, for a better chance at a quiet night.

    • 5

Stay away from rooms near elevators, unless you need to be close for physical reasons.

Choose a Cabin by Size and Configuration of Room

    • 6

Determine the size of the room you will need. Traveling with children will necessitate reserving either a larger room, with sofa beds or Pullman-type beds, or two adjoining rooms.

    • 7

Determine the configuration of your room. There any several room designs and varieties. Family staterooms on the Freedom of the Seas have extra space and good layouts for those traveling with children.

    • 8

Decide whether a view is important to you. The Freedom of the Seas offers rooms with balconies, windows or portholes. Some windows face the Promenade; others are ocean-view.

    • 9

Look for disabled-accessible rooms that have wider doorways if you use a wheelchair. Use a travel agent or call the cruise ship to verify that the stateroom you have selected meets your needs.

    Choose a Cabin by Price

    • 10

Price the rooms, either through a travel agent or by browsing the Freedom of the Seas website. The least expensive rooms are on the lowest decks; most of the largest and most expensive staterooms are on Deck 10.

    • 11

Look for dates that are less expensive. The dates and prices are outlined on the ship website.

    • 12

Use discounts. Freedom of the Seas offers discounts for seniors, active or retired military, law enforcement and firefighter personnel. In addition, residents of some states are eligible for discounts.

    • 13

Book a "guarantee" rate to save money. This assures your stateroom will be the type you want, but not a specific room.
