Volcano National Park is one of the Kona area's most popular of tourist destinations. In addition to learning about the area's natural wonders, visitors to Volcano National Park are afforded the opportunity to drive directly into a real volcano. Visitors are able to watch first hand as steam and lava rise out of Kilauea Volcano's active core. There are also plenty of activities for children through the park's Jr. Ranger program, where kids between the ages of 7 and 12 compete a series of educational and fun, structured activities in order to earn an honorary Jr. Ranger badge. As of August, 2010, admission to the park was free.

Kona is home to Sea Quest, an attraction that allow you to get up close and personal with some of Hawaii's most exciting residents, who just happen to live under water. In addition to snorkeling and scuba diving, Sea Quest offers its guests the opportunity to explore some of Kona's many ancient sea caves and see first hand the area's dolphins and waves as they live in their natural habitat. Sea Quest welcomes newcomers to scuba and snorkeling and lessons are available by licensed instructors. Rates vary based on date and activity, but as of August, 2010, averaged $109 for adults and $89 for kids aged 5 through 12.

Akaka Falls State Park, located in the heart of Kona's tropical islands, is one of the most frequently visited state parks in Hawaii. The park gets its name from the Akaka Falls, a 420-foot tall waterfall that cascades down into the waters of the Kolokole Stream below. Visitors to the park are offered the opportunity to partake in activities such as hiking through the parks many guided tours, swimming in the crystal clear streams or exploring on their own through the park's jungle like surroundings. As of August, 2010, there was no cost for entry into the park, which was open daily.
