Handicap Cruises

Certain cruise companies specialize their ships and travel plans for handicapped travelers. Accommodations for the mobility impaired include designing a ship with enough room in corridors and entrances to allow for 180-degree turns for wheelchairs; providing automatic doors, lifts and ramps; and providing wheelchair assistance at debarking and embarking sites. For those with sensory impairments, such as deafness or blindness, some cruises offer automated alert systems tailored to a passenger's impairment; instructions, directions and menus in braille; and amplified speaker systems and telephones. All cruise ships have to follow the Americans with Disbilities Act following the Spector v. Norwegian Cruise Lines Supreme Court case, which was decided in 2005.
