The company was established in 1906 as the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario. It was originally responsible for generating and distributing electricity to rural areas of the province. In 1998, the company was restructured and renamed as Ontario Power Generation.
OPG's generating stations produce a total of more than 15,000 megawatts of electricity. The company's hydroelectric stations account for the majority of its generating capacity, with gas-fired and nuclear stations making up the rest. OPG's nuclear generating stations produce about half of the province's electricity.
OPG sells electricity to both the wholesale market and to retail consumers. The wholesale market is made up of large industrial customers, such as manufacturers and hospitals. Retail customers are residential and commercial customers. OPG sells electricity to residential and commercial customers through its own retail business, which is known as Ontario Energy Solutions.
OPG is also responsible for operating and maintaining the transmission lines that deliver electricity from its generating stations to customers. The company's transmission network spans more than 60,000 kilometres.
OPG is a major employer in Ontario, with a workforce of approximately 10,000 employees. The company is headquartered in Toronto.
