How to Clean Airplane Parts

Maintaining your aircraft mechanically and aesthetically will help retain its value and safety. Cleaning the aircraft is essential to prevent corrosion that can lead to structural failure or the need to replace parts prematurely. In addition to corrosion, the accumulation of dirt, grease, and particles may cause a mechanic to miss potential problems during an inspection. Clean the aircraft often and only use soap and other cleaning materials recommended for your aircraft.

Instructions

  1. Landing Gear

    • 1

Flush the gear well with water to remove dirt and debris.

    • 2

Wipe down the landing gear struts. Use a soft cotton towel or sponge with a mild detergent to wipe down the struts.

    • 3

Clean the wheel and tire assembly. Clean brakes by flushing them with water. Wipe the wheels and tires with a soapy sponge, then rinse with plain water.

    Airframe

    • 4

      Lower the wing flaps.

    • 5

Clean the aft portion of the aircraft. Rinse the tail section, then apply the mixture of soap and water with a sponge. The force applied should be just enough to avoid moving the rudder and elevator.

    • 6

Clean the wings. Rinse the top of the wing from front to back, then rinse the bottom. Apply the soap with a sponge using just enough pressure that any control surfaces do not move. Wash the soap off before moving to the next section of the aircraft.

    • 7

Clean the main fuselage and the nose of the aircraft. Use kerosene on a towel to remove oil and exhaust stains, then immediately rinse with water. Apply the soap using a cheesecloth or very soft sponge to avoid scratches. Rinse the soap completely.

    • 8

Clean the windows. Many aircraft use plastics for the windows. Any cleaner should be labeled as being approved for aircraft windows. Use only a soft cotton towel to avoid scratches.

    Engine

    • 9

Rinse the propeller blades. Use a soft sponge to apply the soap and rinse clean. For jet engines the first set of compressor blades visible in the front of the engine should be cleaned in the same manner.

    • 10

Clean the aircraft engine casing. Use kerosene and a bristle brush to remove grease and other stains from the engine.

    • 11

Rinse the engine with water. Wash off any dirt particles that may have accumulated while scrubbing the engine.
