Sumpter is an old mining town named by Southern miners that discovered gold in the area. In 1862 they built a log cabin and called it Fort Sumter, dedicating it to the shelling of the fort in Charleston, South Carolina. The postal service took offense, dropped the "fort" and added a "p" to change the name to Sumpter. The town is 20 miles west of Interstate 84 off Highway 7. Pines RV Park offers 18 camp spaces, all graveled with full hook-ups and 30- and 50-amp electrical. Ten of the sites are pull-throughs; all are 60-feet long and wide enough for slide-outs. Most sites are shaded. Campground amenities include picnic tablesWi-Fi, cable TV, a dump station, laundry room, restrooms, showers, library, self-serve RV wash and a general store. Pets are welcome at this park, but there are breed restrictions.
