How to Make Changes to Jeppesen Approach Plates

There are thousands of small-, mid- and large-sized airports in the United States and all have their own layouts of approaches. Unless you possess a superhuman memory, it is nearly impossible to remember approach patterns for the amount of airports a pilot might visit. Jeppesen, an aviation supply retailer and product maker, produces approach charts, sometimes referred to as approach plates. These charts are updated on a regular basis. For those who use the Jeppesen chart service, it is recommended you change either your electronic chart source or your paper source (called the Little Green Book) as updates are sent to you.

Instructions

    • 1

Bring your electronic chart device such as an iPad (as of 2/2011 the FAA has approved the iPad for chart use in small aircraft) or your GPS device to a Wi-Fi or internet connection and hit the "Update Charts" option to download the new and updated approach plates and charts.

Alternately, direct the iPad to the Jeppesen apps and hit the "Update" to get the new approach charts and plates.

    • 2

Select your home airport or another airport you are familiar with and look for updates to ensure the data transfer took place.

    • 3

Open the data files on the iPad or GPS unit to see the date of the last update and data transfer. Make sure the time for the latest update matches the new update done in Step 1. For example, if you updated approach charts and plates on January 1, 2011 at 12:00 p.m., check the data transfer file for these dates to ensure the transfer and change took place.

    • 4

Open the Little Green Book (the Airport Guide for North America) and remove the old airport sections. Replace them with the new and updated approach plates and charts received through Jeppesen's chart update mailings. The Little Green Book is a three ring binder. This makes it easy to remove and replace updates.
