Fall Train Rides in Tennessee

The state of Tennessee features regions filled with forests and rolling hills, particularly in the eastern part of the state near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. These areas boast impressive fall foliage during the autumn months. Tennessee features more than 2,500 miles of railroad tracks as well. A handful of companies throughout the state offer scenic train excursions during the fall.

    • The Southern Appalachia Railway Museum operates a scenic train excursion in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, just 25 miles outside of Knoxville. The train snakes through eastern Tennessee's hills and valleys, while offering views of the fall colors. The train runs during weekends in October, sometimes up to three times daily. The train ride lasts for approximately one hour and covers up to 14 miles of territory. Guests also get to ride aboard a vintage 1950's diesel locomotive.

    Tennessee Central Railway Museum

    • Residing in Nashville, the Tennessee Central Railway Museum offers a series of train rides throughout the surrounding region, including a fall foliage trip. The fall excursion runs for 180 miles roundtrip, from Nashville to Cookeville and back. The scenic ride runs exclusively during the month of October. Guests can purchase snacks and souvenirs aboard all of the trains. Most of the trains also feature private and glass-domed cars for a better view of the region.

    Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum

    • The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum features a Chickamauga Fall Special scenic train excursion during the months of October and November. The train departs from Chattanooga, Tennessee, before turning back around at Chickamauga, Georgia. Guests can enjoy a two-hour layover in Chickamauga and a 45-minute stop at the Civil War battlefield site known as Chickamauga National Military Park. Passengers can travel aboard a vintage steam locomotive outfitted with a dining car. Some fares include lunch or compartment seating.
