Know that Midway station is so-called because it lies midway between the downtown areas of the Twin Cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul. Built in the 1970s, the station feels more like a suburban stop than a major U.S. city's station.
Call a cab. The taxi fare is about around $15 from most destinations in St. Paul and Minneapolis.
Park for free. Midway station is one of the few Amtrak stations that offer free, convenient long-term parking adjacent to the station.
Stay warm in the lounge during the harsh winter weather. The St. Paul station opens early and closes late, so you will never need to wait for a train in the snow.
Wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes. You'll want to be able to move around freely and relax during the long trip.
Check out the sights. You'll catch the train in St. Paul at about 8 in the morning, making it daytime throughout your ride.
Bring games and books to entertain the kids. Young kids can get restless during the 8-hour trip to Chicago.
Eat for free. Meals, along with privacy, newspapers and larger seats, are included with the sleeper rooms. A super roomette, which easily fits 3 adults, are about $70 per group.
