Call Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL or visit Amtrak's web site in the "Resources" section below. On the web site, you can book your train reservations via Amtrak's Fare Finder. You can also navigate the site if you have a PDA, Blackberry or other handheld device.
If you ordered your tickets online or by phone, pick them up at a ticket agent or at one of the Quik-Trak kiosks that can be found at many Amtrak locations (you'll need to enter your reservation number). If you've booked your trip far in advance, you can also request that your tickets be mailed to you.
Evaluate what type of trip you want to New Orleans. Is this a family outing or business trip? Choose your accommodations accordingly.
Choose what class of service you need. Coach offers reclining seats with a leg rest and pillow. A sleeping car costs more, but is private and has a lavatory and shower.
Catch a cab. The train station is located in the Central Business District and taxis line up in front of the main entrance to the passenger terminal. Taxi fares spike during Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest.
Peruse free local papers at the train station for good deals and current events. Be sure to absorb New Orleans' rich jazz/blues music, Cajun food and museums.
