Book a seat on the 2:15 p.m. Empire Builder out of Chicago. This is the most direct route to Seattle. Rolling plains and farmlands give way to snow-capped mountains and lush forests as you travel to Seattle.
Detour south on the California Zephyr. The Zephyr will take you from Chicago through the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. You will take the Coast Starlight from Sacramento to Seattle. This will add about $100 to the cost of your trip.
Conquer the Wild West. Catch the Southwest Chief from Chicago to Los Angeles, which passes by the Grand Canyon. From Los Angeles, you'll ride the entire length of the Coast Starlight line, which winds up the coastline. This will add about $60 to the cost and 30 hours to the length of your trip, but is well worth it.
Reserve your ticket in advance. Each train route from Chicago to Seattle requires you have a reserved seat or room.
Ride in luxury. Every train you'll catch from Chicago to Seattle offers a range of bedrooms. If you ask on board if there are any available rooms, you might get a discount. But you also might be stuck in your seat.
Be flexible. The more flexible your travel dates, the more likely you will be able to travel your desired scenic route.

Run for the border using Amtrak's Thruway bus to Victoria Ferry Service station, which offers high-speed clippers to Victoria Island.
Check the Seahawks schedule. King Street Station is located close to Qwest Field. You might be delayed getting to your final destination on game days.
