Call Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL or visit Amtrak's web site in the "Resources" section below. On the web site, you can book your train reservations via Amtrak's Fare Finder. You can also navigate the site if you have a PDA, Blackberry or other handheld device. Buy your ticket before you get on the train to St. Paul, as all seats are reserved and you may not purchase tickets on board.
If you ordered your tickets online or by phone, pick them up at a ticket agent or at one of the Quik-Trak kiosks that can be found at many Amtrak locations (you'll need to enter your reservation number). If you've booked your trip far in advance, you can also request that your tickets be mailed to you. Remember, fares go up about $30 for last-minute reservations on a crowded train.
Consider a sleeper upgrade if you want to splurge on a little privacy or would like to take an afternoon nap.
Plan to be on board just over eight hours. Pass your time in the sightseer car for the best views on the Empire Builder train.
Rent a digEplayer portable entertainment device pre-loaded with movies, music and videos at the Chicago station for about $15. Return it with the postage-paid envelope when you arrive in St. Paul.
Reserve your dining time for dinner. After you board, an Amtrak crew member will pass through the train and ask if you would like to reserve a table in the dining car. Reservations are accepted in 15 minute increments from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Wave goodbye to your friends or relatives from the train platform. Non-ticketed guests may accompany you all the way to the train platform, and say goodbye just like in the movies.
