When did steel drums originate?

Steel drums likely emerged during the early part of the 1900s in Trinidad and Tobago.

Originally, they came from reusing scrap metal left on the islands by oil producers as oil drums. Eventually, these recycled containers transformed into melodic percussion instruments played during Carnival celebrations and popular culture in these countries. Over time, the craft of crafting, designing, and producing these instruments continued to develop further as a defining symbol of their heritage.
