Visit your local Florida DMV office (see resources below) and provide them with your expiring CDL and two documents that prove your identity, such as a passport, driver's license, proof of Florida residence and your Social Security card. Call before visiting the DMV office, as you are not always required to bring all of these documents.
Complete the basic eye test, which you will have undergone when you originally applied for your CDL. Pass this exam with a minimum vision score of 20/40 on the Snellen chart with or without corrective lenses. You may also be required to fill in another DOT medical examination form (see resources).
Visit your physician and complete the DOT medical examination report if you are asked to do so by the DMV. Provide your doctor with all of the information required to complete the form, such as any medication you regularly take and any health problems that you might have noticed since you last obtained a CDL.
Consider whether you need to renew any CDL endorsements. If you have a class H or X HazMat endorsement on your license, you are required to retake the HazMat knowledge exam each time you reapply for a CDL. Undergo the HazMat background check process, which is also required every time you renew your license.
Pay the fees associated with renewing your Florida CDL. At the time of publication, a renewed CDL costs $75 in the state of Florida. Pay $7 for each CDL endorsement that you wish to renew, such as the class P endorsement, which allows you to drive commercial motor vehicles designed for 16 or more people (including the driver). Provide the $89.25 fee for the HazMat background check if you are renewing a class H or X endorsement.
