How to Get to Chilean Patagonia

The Chilean Patagonia is one of the few true wildernesses left in the world. There is no direct road communicating it with any of your likely ports of entry to Chile. Yet, whether you are looking for some of the world's best whitewater rafting, kayaking and mountain climbing or simply want to do a little fly-fishing, you will not be disappointed. The region of Patagonia has been shrouded in mystery since it was first visited by European explorers.

Instructions

    • 1

Fly to Santiago de Chile's Commodoro Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport. There are other international airports you can fly into, such as Diego Aracena International Airport in Valparaiso, but you will have more travel options if you travel to Santiago de Chile.

    • 2

Get another flight to the sprawling port city of Puerto Montt. This is most definitely not one of the attractions of the Patagonia, so plan to get in and out as fast as possible.

    • 3

Take a ferry or another airplane to the coastal town of Chaiten. Chaiten has the look and feel of an Alaskan fishing village and provides a convenient path of entry into the wonders of the Chilean Patagonia.

    • 4

Travel to the natural attractions of your choice either by car, boat or on foot. A popular destination is the town of Futaleufu, which is three and a half hour drive up the valley.
