Compile a list of the items needed for the trip, including only what is necessary, such as several changes of clothes, shoes, and toiletries. Depending on your destination -- whether sunny or cold, or for business or pleasure -- you may also need work files, a coat or bathing suit. It is important to add all these items to your list before you start packing.
Pull out clothing for the trip, choosing outfits that you can mix and match. For example, select a pair of dress and casual pants that each match well with a variety of shirts.
Select no more than three pairs of shoes for the trip: business/dress shoes, casual shoes such as flip-flops or sandals, and sneakers. Wear the largest, or bulkiest pair of shoes while traveling to maximize suitcase space.
Set aside items on your list that will fit in carry-on bags, such as a camera, passport, wallet, makeup or other small non-liquid toiletries and snacks.
Place shoes along the sides of the suitcase.
Roll items of clothing tightly, and place into the suitcase in neat, tight rows. If packing some materials, such as cashmere, fold neatly and place on top.
Place additional items -- such as sunglasses, towels, or work files - atop the rolled rows of clothing, or into remaining corner space.
