How to Pack for a Week in Hong Kong

The islands of Hong Kong are a Special Administrative Region of China, and share many of the same cultures and customs that are practiced on the mainland. With an immense city, rolling hills and a surrounding ocean, Hong Kong offers a variety of activities, which may present packing challenges if you're planning a visit.

Instructions

    • 1

Before you pack for a week in Hong Kong, consider your itinerary. Pack walking shoes for sightseeing and long days on foot, and take comfortable clothing for the plane ride home. If you plan to spend many hours shopping, bring clothing that will allow you to try on outfits without a lot of effort. You may want to spend time hiking on Hong Kong's many trails; if so, bring hiking shoes and layered clothing to stay comfortable.

    • 2

Pack weather-appropriate apparel. Consider the time of year in which you will be traveling to Hong Kong, and pack clothing and outerwear that will be appropriate for the season. If you are traveling in the warm months, bring light clothing; Hong Kong can be unbearably hot. In the winter months, bring warm clothing. Check the weather forecasts before you go, to make sure the clothing you pack will be warm enough.

    • 3

Remember special events. Hong Kong offers a variety of restaurants, clubs and other entertainment venues. When packing for a week there, plan outfits that will be appropriate for formal events, casual events and anything in between. Hong Kong residents often dress elaborately for work and play, so bring clothing that will not make you feel under-dressed.

    • 4

Bring clothing you wear at home. Resist the temptation to pack outfits in which you feel uncomfortable or constricted. If you are uncomfortable in something at home, the discomfort will likely be magnified when you are in Hong Kong. Long travel times and jet lag often leave travelers bloated and puffy.

    • 5

Leave space for shopping. Because it is at the center of the manufacturing universe, Hong Kong is a shopper's paradise. In its bustling street markets and sprawling shopping malls, you will find everything from the latest fashions to fake designer goods to high-end electronics. When packing, be sure to leave space for purchases.

    • 6

Resist the urge to over-pack. Although it will be tempting to take every possible item, make every effort to pack light. Remember that you will be hauling your luggage from the airport to taxis to buses and other modes of transportation. As a rule of thumb, pack only what you can easily handle yourself, and remember the extra weight you will come home with.
