Plan your trip. What is necessary to pack will vary depending on the time of year you choose to travel to California. Also, plan your activities and destinations so that you can specify certain items.
Check the weather forecast. California is a large state with numerous types of regions. Depending on your destinations, the weather may have drastic differences.
Pack clothes for daytime activities. The majority of Southern California has mild to hot temperatures and usually calls for no more than shorts and a t-shirt. During the winter months, pants and a sweater may be necessary. Coastal and Northern California almost always require pants and sweaters.
Pack clothes for nighttime activities. Certain areas have stricter dress codes for restaurants, bars and nightclubs. If you are going out in the city bring nice shirts, nice pants and/or dresses. More casual establishments allow jeans and nice t-shirts.
Pack necessary shoes for planned activities. It is common for people to wear flip flops throughout the year. If you plan to visit any of the California State Parks or nature reserves, be sure to pack tennis shoes or athletic shoes. For nighttime activities, pack dress shoes or high heels.
Pack your sunglasses and sunscreen. You will need protection from the sun here all year round. Also pack a road map to be able to find your way around California's extensive freeway system.
