There are two kinds of trailers. The single axle holds two wheels on either side of the trailer, and the tandem axle uses two axles housing two wheels on each side, for a total of four wheels to balance the load.
The best way to set up the axle is illustrated by the example of having a 10 foot trailer, placing 4 feet of rectangular body behind the axle, and 6 feet to the front of the axle. This places 60 percent of the load to the front of the trailer, while 40 percent is balanced over the rear. For a tandem trailer, measure the 60 and 40 percent spacing from the equalizer hangar that resides between the two axles.
The measurements of the trailer do not include the trailer's tongue, or mounting point. Make sure, when measuring the spacing setup, that only the rectangular portion is measured, without taking the tongue into the calculation.
