Consult the guidelines in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for the specifications of the road markings you need to make. As an example, consider the markings for a mandatory right turn lane added to a through lane. According to page 356 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, "A dotted white line marking shall be used as the lane line to separate a through lane that continues beyond the interchange or intersection from a mandatory exit or turn lane." So in this situation, you will separate the preexisting through lane from the added turn lane with a dotted white line.
Attach a 4 to 6 inch paint roller to your striping machine. If your striping machine uses pneumatic power, adjust the spray width between 4 and 6 inches.
Load your striping machine with the appropriate color of paint, white or yellow in most cases, according to your model's instructions.
Stripe the added lane according to the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Continuing from the previous example, a dotted line is identifiable by "noticeably shorter line segments separated by shorter gaps than used for a broken line. The width of a dotted line extension shall be at least the same as the width of the line it extends."
Paint whatever symbols are necessary to ensure the added lane is understandable using a stencil and a spray gun.
