EPA Diesel Emission Reduction Grants

Under the Diesel Emission Reduction Act (DERA) enacted by the U.S. Congress through the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the Environmental Protection Agency is entitled to award grants and loan funding to promote diesel emission reductions.
  1. Funding

    • The DERA program allows up to $200 million yearly to be awarded to the EPA for the purpose of grant and loan awards. 70 percent of the available funds are required to be awarded nationally as competitive grants, while the remaining 30 percent of funds are awarded to state governments for diesel emission reduction programs.

    Grants

    • The EPA awards four types of grants through the DERA program for reducing diesel emissions in the U.S. The four available grants in 2010 are the National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program, The National Clean Diesel Emerging Technologies Program, SmartWay Clean Diesel Finance Program and the State Clean Diesel Grant Program.

    Eligibility

    • EPA DERA grants are available to state, local and tribal government agencies with jurisdiction over transportation and air quality; also eligible are non-profit organizations who provide services for diesel fleets. The State Clean Diesel Grant Program is allocated to state level agencies who initiate diesel emission reduction programs that meet EPA eligibility requirements.
