How to Get Around Louisville, Kentucky

Louisville, Kentucky is known as the River City because it sits on the Ohio River. It's just across from Southern Indiana, in the North Central part of Kentucky. Most people who travel to Louisville are there for one reason--the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday of May. But, the city is doing all it can to become a destination year-round.

      Know that downtown streets are laid out in a grid pattern. Further out, you'll find a wheel-and-spoke system. two beltways circle the city. I-264 is known as "the Watterson". I-265 is also called "the Gene Snyder".

      Rent a car at the Louisville International airport. All major rental companies operate booths there.

      Hail a cab. The Louisville Carriage Company was founded in 1893 and is now called YellowCab and Checker Cab, with close to 300 cabs running through Louisville 24 hours a day/seven days a week. Call (502) 636-5511.

      Jump on a TARC bus. The Transit Authority of River City has buses that run from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with later hours on weekends. It costs $1.25 for adults and 60 cents for children and senior citizens.

      Bicycle around Louisville. The city's program started in 2005. Bike lanes are being added to streets. TARC buses are equipped with bike racks.
