Problems With Pop-Up Campers at the Beach

Setting up a pop-up camper on the beach can be a great way to have a beach-front vacation without paying the beach-front price tag. RV camping is fun and affordable but not without problems, especially at the beach.
  1. Sand

    • Sand be an issue for pop-up camping at the beach.

Sand is everywhere on the beach, in fact, it is the beach. Be aware that sand will find its way into your camper during your trip. A tip to keep sand out of your camper is to find any holes ahead of time and tape them up. It's a good idea to have a deep plastic tub full of tap or ocean water. Keep this close to the entrance and make sure everyone rinses their sandy feet and hands before they come inside.

    Wind

    • Wind can damage your camper.

Not only can wind whip sand everywhere, but it can also damage the camper. Most pop-up campers are not built to withstand strong gales. Make sure you are keeping an eye on the beach forecasts. If strong winds are predicted, lower and stow your awning or roll it up. If the winds are really strong, fold up your camper and head toward your vehicle or a hotel for the night. You don't want to risk the camper being blown over or damaged.

    Water

    • Storm brewing over the ocean

Storms on the beach are common. Be aware of the weather forecasts during your vacation. Rain can often make its way inside your camper. It can especially come in through fabric walls, zippers and seams. It's also a good idea to be aware of the water tables and tides for the beach you are staying on. You want to avoid water damage and the possibility of getting washed into the ocean.

    The Unexpected

    • Make sure the essentials are packed before heading off on your vacation.

You can never be too prepared. Become familiar with the beach you will be camping on. Never assume that it is like another campground you've been too. Find out ahead of time if you need to bring your own fresh water, what regulations apply to fires and types of campers, and how close you are to hotels and hospitals. It's good to have a back-up plan and reliable transportation. Get familiar with your camper and how it works before you head to the beach.
