Purchase the correct gas cartridge for your portable gas burner. Gas cartridges come in various sizes and heating capabilities. Keep in mind how many meals you are planning to cook and whether you will need to do other jobs like melt snow or boil water for drinking.
Hook the gas cartridge into the locking mechanism on the burner. Each model will hook up differently. Some gas burners will connect to the cartridge with a hose. For these burners, twist the hose into the inputs on the cartridge and burner. Other cartridges will connect directly to the burner. Line up the connections on the burner and cartridge and twist to lock in place.
Twist the burner's light button to "Light." It may click like a regular gas stove before the flame appears.
Adjust the flame to your desired level. Keep in mind how many ounces of gas you have and how quickly the gas will run out at each flame level.
Use the burner to cook food in a pot, pan or other cookware. Turn off the burner flame by reversing the dial to "Off."
