How to Use an NBC Canteen Cap

A nuclear, biological, chemical canteen cap allows you to drink from a canteen without removing a gas mask and without exposing the water to harmful substances. All U.S. military canteens are now made with NBC caps, but the caps on other canteens and older military models may need to be replaced for use with a gas mask. An NBC cap is made out of polypropylene, rubber and stainless steel, and it is BPA free.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the canteen with water and screw on the NBC cap. Tilt the canteen slowly sideways to check for leaks.

    • 2

Attach the drinking hose to the nozzle on the left side of the gas mask. Tug on it to ensure it is attached securely.

    • 3

Put the gas mask on your face by pulling the back straps to the sides and looping them around the back of your head. Pull the plastic cover down around yourself if one is attached. This cover should fall just below your shoulders.

    • 4

Attached the canteen to the end of the gas mask drinking hose by flipping up the top piece of the NBC cap and inserting the hose. Twist the hose to secure it. Shake the canteen back and forth to make sure it won't come off easily.

    • 5

Position your mouth over the tube inside of the gas mask. Raise the canteen up in front of your face or a little higher and tilt it so it faces down.

    • 6

Suck water through the tube to drink. If the canteen is soft plastic, you can squeeze it to help water move down through the tube.
