How to Install a Solar Panel on a Tent Trailer

Solar panels allow campers to spend more time outside of RV parks without the high costs of fuel for the generator. Camping does not require large amounts of power, and a simple solar installation can last for a lifetime. The hard roof of a tent trailer is ideal for solar installation. The generator slot is also capable of holding a battery bank. It is important that the solar system is properly installed in order for it to be functional.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the area for the battery bank along the axle. This will allow tail and tongue weight to remain unchanged.

    • 2

Place two 12-volt deep cycle batteries in your new battery bank. Locate the AC junction box on the camper. Cut the power cord, leaving one foot attached to the box. Attach a 30-amp male plug to the remaining power cord.

    • 3

Attach a 30-amp male plug on one end of the cut cord and a matching 30-amp female plug on the other end of the cord to create an extension cord.

    • 4

Measure the roof for the solar panels. Attach solar mounting brackets to the roof of the camper. Slide the panels on the brackets and lock into place by bolting the panels to the bracket.

    • 5

Bolt a charge controller and power inverter to the interior of the camper. Run the wire from the solar panel to the charge controller. Run the wiring from the charge controller to the battery bank.

    • 6

Run the inverter wires directly to the battery bank. Connect the battery bank to the AC junction box and use the box to power the camper.
