How to Camp at Wawona in Yosemite Park

Wawona campground is located in Yosemite Park, 4000 feet high and one mile north of the small village of Wawona and Wawona Lodge hotel. The campground has 93 campsites for tents or trailers, one tent site for groups and two campsites for campers with horses and horse trailers. RVs up to 35 feet are permitted. Each campsite has fire rings and food lockers, and all sites are near bathrooms which have flushing toilets and drinking water. The Wawona campground is open to campers all year, but the horse campsites are only available between April and October. Reservations are required to use the campground between March and September.

      Make a reservation for a campsite. For the RV and tent sites, reservations can be made online (see Reference 2).

      If you are making a reservation for a horse site, call 877-444-6777. Horse and group site reservations can not be made online.

      Reservations are required from April to October. During October to April, the camp sites are given out on a first-come, first-served basis. The maximum stay is seven days during the April to October season, and a maximum of six people, except in the group site which can accommodate 13 to 30 people. Reservations can be made up to five months ahead.

      Drive east either on highway 140 from Merced, or highway 120 from Manteca. When arriving in the park, there are signs pointing towards Wawona, which is located in the southern end of the park. It is 27 miles from Yosemite Valley and eight miles into the park.

      Alternatively, take highway 41 north from Fresno. The campground is situated on highway 41.

      Alternatively, take the bus. There are free shuttle buses from Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove, which stop at the Wawona Store, one mile from the Wawona Campground. Highway buses run to Yosemite Valley from Merced, where the nearest Amtrak train and Greyhound bus stations are. There is also an airport in Merced, as well as in Fresno and Modesto, but there is no public transportation from Fresno or Modesto to the park.

      Check in at the ranger station. Check-in and check-out times are both at noon. If you have a reservation, you can arrive at any time until 10 AM the day after the first day of your reservation.

      Arrive at the assigned camp site, park your RV or horse trailer, or pitch a tent. All campsites are reachable with an RV, but only two are wheelchair-friendly.
