How to Camp in South Carlsbad State Beach, California

South Carlsbad State Beach is in San Diego County in Southern California. The park's campsite is on a bluff overlooking the ocean and, because of the view, is one of the more popular campsites in the California State Park system. Peak season for this campground runs between March and the end of November each year. This park features fishing, swimming, skindiving and surfing. The campground has wireless Internet access, showers, restrooms, a convenience store and a laundry station. Tent, trailer and RV campsites are available.

      Make a reservation. Reservations for campsites open six months in advance. Be sure to make your reservation early, as campsites can sell out quickly. South Carlsbad State Beach charges a nightly fee for campsites, and you must pay a deposit at the time of reservation. You can complete reservations online or over the phone.

      Arrive at the campground and check in. Check-in at California State Park campsites is after 2 p.m. on the first day of your reservation. You must present your reservation voucher or confirmation number and photo identification at check-in. South Carlsbad's park kiosk is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

      Prepare your campsite. Unload or unpack all of your equipment as needed. If you will need to use the shower facilities, purchase tokens at the park kiosk or at the ranger station. RV rental is available from nearby private businesses if you are not a fan of tents or trailers. There are no hookups for RVs at this campsite. Generator use is permitted from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

      Know the rules. Respect other campers by observing the quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Dogs and other animals are permitted in campsites and must be on a leash at all times; however, pets are not permitted on the beaches. Alcohol is permitted on your campsite but nowhere else in the park.

      Clean up and check out. Keep in mind that the park has cut services, including trash removal, so all campers will need to pack out whatever they bring into the park. Take care with the plants and wildlife in the park, as they are protected by state law. Checkout is at noon on the final day of your reservation.
