Beach Campgrounds in Southern California

In addition to attractions like Disneyland, the Getty Museum and the San Diego Zoo, southern California is known for its beaches. Visitors to the region can even find accommodations along the Pacific coastline with the beach just steps away from their doors. Among these beachfront accommodations in southern California are campgrounds, which offer sites for recreational vehicles and tents as well as basic amenities and recreational activities that make for a comfortable and enjoyable vacation.
  1. Refugio State Beach Park

    • Located in Goleta, Refugio State Beach Park is a public campground, approximately 120 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The campground consists of 85 dirt campsites for tents or recreational vehicles. The sites are large enough to accommodate vehicles up to 30 feet in length and are mostly located in shaded areas. No hookups of any kind are available at the campground, though restrooms and coin-operated hot showers are available for guests' convenience. The campground has a picnic area outfitted with grills. An on-site store sells basic groceries and firewood. Guests can swim and saltwater fish in the Pacific Ocean, which the campground overlooks. Hiking and bicycle trails wind through the park.

      Refugio State Beach Park operates year round. The California State Parks department imposes a seven-day maximum length on all stays at the park. Reservations are recommended and accepted online or by phone.

    Montana de Oro State Park

    • Montana de Oro State Park is in Los Ocos, around 13 miles from the southern California city of San Luis Obispo. The public campground has 50 paved, shaded campsites for recreational vehicles or tents. Twenty-seven of the spaces are pull-throughs, and all of the sites measure 24 feet by 27 feet in size. The campground does not offer hookups. Toilets are available at the campground, but not showers. The Pacific Ocean is adjacent to the campground for swimming and saltwater fishing. Guided tours of the park and family activities are offered regularly. The campground has hiking, nature and horseback-riding trails that wind throughout the varied terrain of the park, which includes streams, canyons and mountains in addition to the beach. The park is open from May to September. A 14-day maximum stay is imposed for all vacations at the park. Reservations are recommended and taken online or over the phone.

    San Clemente State Beach

    • Situated in San Clemente, public San Clemente State Beach is 63 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 58 miles northwest of San Diego. The campground has 160 paved recreational vehicle and tent campsites, 72 of which are pull-throughs. The maximum length for campers at the park is 30 feet. Full electric, water and sewage hookups are available throughout the park. Wireless Internet access is available around the camp office. The campground offers restrooms, showers, a sewage waste dump and public telephones. Campers can fish and swim in the Pacific Ocean while staying at the park. Nature trails are located at the park. San Clemente State Beach is open year round. Reservations are recommended and accepted online or by phone. The State of California imposes a seven-day maximum length on all stays.
