Creekside Trailer Camping in Greer, Arizona

Greer, Ariz., is a tiny community in the eastern part of the state, in the White Mountains. For years it has been a summer time escape for people living in the hotter areas such as Phoenix or Tucson. The secret has gotten out, and the area is becoming even more popular.

There are 630 miles of streams, including the Little Colorado River, within a 30-mile area. The town is at 8,600 feet and is at the end of a highway, making it secluded.
  1. Types

    • Greer is at the end of Highway 373, meaning there is no through traffic. The highway was once a remote road, but now it has many more campgrounds and many lodging establishments. But with no through traffic, Greer remains a remote, if not secret, hideaway.

Many campgrounds are along this road and in the area for your RV or trailer camper. A few sites also are inside the area of Greer and along the Colorado River.

    RV Parks

    • The Mountain Aire RV Park just outside of Greer is typical of the RV parks in the area. It has 32 RV spaces with full hookups--water, sewer and electric--with 30- and 50-amp connections. Spaces are available by the day, week, month or season.

Renters have access to the river, but there are no campsites actually on the river itself.
Pets are allowed but not tent camping.

    National Forest

    • Greer is in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, which has miles and miles of trails. Trails are along the streams as well as around area lakes. Three lakes are in the immediate area of Greer. The lakes and streams offer great trout fishing.

Benney Creek Campground is also in the national forest and has 32 RV sites. Other campgrounds in the forest include Grayling Campground and Rolf C. Hoyer Campground.

    Season

    • There is something different about each season in Greer, and each has its own appeal and reason for camping. Spring has wildflowers blooming as the weather warms up. Summer is warm but a lot cooler than the surrounding desert, fall brings its colors on the aspen trees, and winter provides skiing opportunities.

    No Secret

    • Greet has about 100 full-time residents, and about all of them are in the tourism industry. State officials estimate that there will be 200,000 tourists visiting the area each year, just "in season"--July through September.

    Fishing

    • Three lakes--Big Lake, Crescent Lake and Sunrise Lake--are all within just a few miles of Greer and are popular fishing areas. Forks of the Little Colorado River are within easy walking distance of the town. The river has trails along its banks, and the forest around the river is lush in summer.
