How to Drain the Front Differential on a 2002 Toyota Tacoma

On 4WD models of the 2002 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, there are both front and rear differentials. The function of the differential is to transfer the power from the drive shaft to the axles. Since 4WD vehicles supply power to both axles, each needs a differential. Toyota recommends that owners drain and replace the differential oil every 30,000 miles or 24 months. You should be able to complete this task in about 30 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • 4 jack stands
  • Drain pan
  • Socket set

Instructions

    • 1

Drive the vehicle for several miles to warm up the differential oil, which will make it drain better.

    • 2

Raise the vehicle and support all four wheels with jack stands. You can skip this step and still perform the task, but there will be limited room to maneuver beneath the truck.

    • 3

Place the drain pan beneath the front differential drain plug, located in the bottom center of the differential.

    • 4

Use a socket wrench to loosen the drain plug. Continue to remove it by hand until you can pull it free.

    • 5

Allow the oil to completely drain, and replace the drain plug. Tighten with a torque wrench to 20 foot-pounds of torque.

    • 6

Use a socket to remove the front differential fill plug, which is on the rear of the differential, directly above the drain plug.

    • 7

Use a hand pump or large syringe to fill the differential with oil. Continue until the oil begins to overflow from the fill hole. Replace the fill plug and tighten it to 20 ft-lbs of torque.
