Global Distribution of Coastal Dune Reserves
Sand dune systems occur on every continent except Antarctica. Many are protected as nature reserves, national parks, or Natura 2000 sites. Below is a representative selection by country:
Australia
- Cooloola (Great Sandy NP), QLD: Massive dunes, perched lakes, rainforest.
- Myall Lakes NP, NSW: Coastal dunes, lakes, wetlands.
- Ninety Mile Beach Marine Park, VIC: Long barrier dunes, Gippsland Lakes.
Canada
- Prince Edward Island NP: Red sandstone cliffs, parabolic dunes, piping plover habitat.
- Sandbanks PP, ON: World's largest freshwater baymouth barrier dunes (Lake Ontario).
- Pacific Rim NPR, BC: Long Beach unit — dunes, temperate rainforest, Nuu-chah-nulth heritage.
Denmark
- Råbjerg Mile, North Jutland: Migrating dune (moves ~15 m/yr), largest in N. Europe.
- Skagen Odde / Grenen Nature Areas: Dynamic dunes at Denmark's northern tip (Skagerrak/Kattegat meeting).
France
- Dune du Pilat, Nouvelle-Aquitaine: Europe's tallest dune (~110 m), moving inland.
- Baie de Somme, Hauts-de-France: Dunes, marshes, seal colony, bird migration hotspot.
- Landes de Gascogne PNR: Vast maritime pine forest on stabilized dunes.
Ireland
- Inch Strand, Co. Kerry: Sandy spit, dunes, birdlife.
- Rossnowlagh, Co. Donegal: Dune-backed beach, surfing.
- Curracloe, Co. Wexford: Dunes, pine forest, "Saving Private Ryan" beach.
Mexico
- Vizcaíno Desert BR, BCS: Coastal dunes, gray whale lagoons, UNESCO.
- San Pedro Mártir NP, BC: High-elevation dunes? (Primarily coniferous; coastal dunes in nearby reserves).
- Cabo Pulmo NMP, BCS: Coral reef, coastal dunes, community conservation success.
Netherlands
- Schoorlse Duinen NP: Highest dunes in NL (~55 m), heathland, forest.
- Texel NP (Duinen van Texel): Wadden Island dunes, diverse habitats.
- Zuid-Kennemerland NP: Dunes, lakes, bison, near Amsterdam.
New Zealand
- Ninety Mile Beach, Northland: Actually ~88 km; sand highway, dunes, Te Paki stream.
- Aupouri Forest, Northland: Planted forest on ancient dunes.
- Farewell Spit, South Island: 30 km sand spit, Ramsar, gannet colony.
Spain
- Doñana NP, Andalusia: Mobile dunes, marshes, lynx, imperial eagle, UNESCO.
- Albufera de Mallorca NP, Balearics: Coastal lagoon, dunes, rice fields.
- Maspalomas Dunes, Gran Canaria: Iconic golden dunes, tourist pressure.
United Kingdom
- The Wash (Lincs/Norfolk): Vast intertidal, saltmarsh, dunes, huge bird numbers.
- Norfolk Coast AONB: Holkham, Blakeney, Winterton dunes — Natterjack toads, seals.
- Newborough Warren, Anglesey: Dunes, pine forest, red squirrels, rare plants.
Why Protect Coastal Dunes? Five Core Reasons
1. Biodiversity Hotspots
Specialized, often endemic species: plants (sea rocket, marram grass, dune slack orchids), insects (dune tiger beetle), reptiles (sand lizard), birds (plovers, terns, nightjar), mammals (voles, bats). Many are threatened.
2. Natural Coastal Defense
Dunes absorb wave energy, reduce erosion, and protect inland infrastructure. A healthy dune system is cheaper and more adaptive than hard engineering (seawalls). Post-storm recovery is natural.
3. Water Filtration & Aquifer Recharge
Dune sands filter rainfall, recharging coastal aquifers (critical for freshwater supply) and reducing pollutant runoff to sea. Saltwater intrusion is mitigated.
4. Carbon Sequestration
Dune soils (especially with vegetation) store carbon. Restoration enhances this "blue carbon" sink.
5. Recreation, Culture & Economy
Tourism (hiking, birding, photography), education, spiritual value, traditional uses. Sustainable access (boardwalks, designated paths) balances use and protection.
Management Challenges
- Trampling, off-road vehicles, invasive species (e.g., Rosa rugosa, Acacia), nitrogen deposition, sea-level rise, "coastal squeeze" (dunes trapped between rising sea and fixed development).
- Solutions: Dynamic management (allow migration), sediment nourishment, invasive removal, zoning, community stewardship.
Protecting coastal dunes is an investment in resilience, biodiversity, and the natural heritage of coastal nations worldwide.
