Youth Hostels in Newfoundland

So you've decided to explore the large Canadian island of Newfoundland and need a place to rest your head. There are several hotels, resorts and other accommodations available but if you're looking for a thrifty alternative, a youth hostel is your best bet. While you won't receive the privacy and services of a hotel, most of them offer more than just a bed.
  1. City Hostel

    • Located in downtown St. John's, City Hostel is within walking distance of many local attractions, including George Street, an internationally renowned streets known for its many drinking establishments. City Hostel is owned and operated by two locals. It offers private and dormitory rooms, as well as a common room for guests. Wi-Fi is available in the rooms and the lobby, as well as telephone and fax facilities. Breakfast is not included but a guest kitchen is available, along with luggage storage and travel information. Linens and towels are also provided and there is even room to park your bike or car. As of March 2010, rates start at $33 a night per person.

    Abba Hostel

    • Abba Hostel is not your typical place to stay. Located in downtown St. John's, guests are on their own. Keys are left in the mail box during a specified arrival time (between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m.) and travel information can be found at the owner's sister inns close by. Late arrivals or one day bookings are not accepted. Rooms have wireless internet, free telephone use and CCTV.

      Bathrooms have hair dryers and basic toiletries, including linens and towels, and guests have access to a lobby with free Wi-Fi and a kitchen. Free carpark is available and smoking is not allowed. As of March 2010, rooms start at $21 per night.

    Sir Wilfred Grenfell College

    • Sir Wilfred Grenfell College is located in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, nestled in the foothills of the Long Range Mountains. It offers chalet-style apartments for groups of four or more. Bedrooms are private and bathrooms are shared. Laundry is available as well as recreational facilities.

      Rooms have telephone service with free local calls and internet capabilities and guests also have access to a living/dining room and a full kitchen. Daily, weekly and monthly rates are available.

    Foggy Rock Hostel

    • Foggy Rock Hostel is a little pricier place to stay. Its located in downtown St. John's and is a short walk to Water Street, where you'll find a variety of shops, eateries and other entertainment. Rooms are equipped with king size beds, cable TV and linens. Guests have access to a full-service kitchen (breakfast not included), terrace, common room, laundry, parking and an airport shuttle can be arranged. Wi-FI is also available in rooms and the lobby.

    Lead Cove Hostel

    • In Lead Cove you'll find an older, restored home on the Baccalieu Trail on the Bay de Verde peninsula that now serves as a hostel. Don't let the old exterior fool you, its been newly renovated. Wi-Fi is available, as well as a well-equipped kitchen and laundry facility for guests' convenience.
