Ski Hostels in Italy

Ski trips to the Italian Alps are not always synonymous with traveling on a budget, and there certainly are a number of high-priced resorts to prove it. However, a handful of genuine hostels in Italy are located right in the midst of some the best skiing in Europe.
  1. Ostello Dolomiti

    • Ostello Dolomiti is located in San Martino di Castrozza in northeastern Italy, about 100 miles north of Venice and south of the Austrian border. The town is part of Paneveggio Natural Park and is surrounded by a steep section of the Alps known as the Dolomites, which not only provide hundreds of acres of skiing, but are now on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The hostel describes itself as an "ideal accommodation for young folks" and offers a common room with satellite TV and a small bar, as well as a large outdoor seating area. While typical dorm-style rooms are available, private rooms also can be reserved. The hotel provides free parking for guests.

    Youth Hostel Dobbiaco

    • Youth Hostel Dobbiaco also is in northeastern Italy, but less than 10 miles away from the Austrian border. The hostel actually is part of a larger hotel known as the Grandhotel Toblach, which is made up of several 18th century buildings spread over several acres. While the hostel has limited perks compared with the grand hotel, it still offers a game room, bar, washing machines and a small fitness center, and the same skiing is available. Dobbiaco also is located next to the jagged and steep Dolomite section of the alps, which has an abundance of downhill skiing. Less steep land for cross-country skiing also is nearby.

    Il Casello Hostel

    • In the northwestern part of Italy, closer to the Swiss and French border, the Aosta Valley rests in between dozens of Alpine peaks. Here, Il Casello, a two-story hostel and bed & breakfast, has been in business since 2005. With the nearest train station more than 20 miles away, Il Casello and the valley itself attract mainly outdoors enthusiasts. Biking, rafting and rock climbing also are accessible nearby. Ski slopes are within 15 miles of the hostel. Rooms at the Il Casello range from singles to dormitories, and while breakfast is complementary, dinner and lunch are provided for a small fee. The main transportation into and out of town is by bus.
