Hotels near Thistle, Utah

In April 1983, a landslide dammed the Spanish Fork River downriver from Thistle, Utah, a small town approximately 60 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. As the river overflowed its banks, the citizens were hastily evacuated, and in a matter of days, the town was inundated and destroyed. Because of the instability of the detritus dam, the resulting 900-acre, 200-foot deep Thistle Lake was drained during the subsequent months. Today, only the ruins of Thistle remain. Accommodations can be found nearby for those visiting the site of the nation's costliest landslide.
