How to Leave a Tip for a Housekeeper at a Hotel

Housekeepers are vital members of a hotel's staff. They help make a guest's stay enjoyable by keeping the room neat and clean. They also take care of corridors, elevators, lobbies and other hotel common areas by ensuring these areas stay tidy and sanitary. Housekeepers stock the room with soaps and shampoos, clean towels and washcloths. They're also responsible for replenishing any food items in the room, such as coffee. Because of all they do, it has become customary to leave a tip as a way of saying thanks.

Instructions

    • 1

Tip $1 or $2 per person per night. Leave more if there were special circumstances--for example, if you made a mess of the room or required more towels or extra blankets. If you're staying in a high-end hotel, it is customary to tip $3 to $5 per person per night because such hotels are generally associated with a higher degree of service.

    • 2

Leave a short note with the tip to indicate that it is for the housekeeper. Hotel staff are usually trained to leave any money they find in the rooms.

    • 3

Place the tip on the pillow, where it will be readily noticed. A nightstand or desk top is also acceptable.
