How to Use a Walmart MoneyCard to Reserve a Hotel Room

Many hotels state they accept most major credit cards, but often mention nothing about debit cards, which creates confusion when it comes to reserving a room. While a Walmart MoneyCard requires you to add funds to it, making it different than a standard debit card, it is still considered a debit card for transaction purposes. Hotels generally do accept debit cards but, after tacking on extra fees such as a deposit, your total price for the room may not reflect the reservation price.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your Walmart MoneyCard balance to ensure you have enough money on your card to cover room expenses. Walmart offers MoneyCard users an online account management service in which you can check your balance.

    • 2

Call the hotel. Ask if debit cards are accepted. If they are, inquire about a deposit or hold amount. Many hotels will place a hold on a portion of your available funds to protect against damages. This hold is typically released within a week, but you may not see the money appear in your MoneyCard account for several weeks.

    • 3

Visit the hotel and hand over your Walmart MoneyCard and photo ID. The hotel will finalize the transaction. As long as you have enough money to cover both the room charge and applicable deposit, you should not encounter any issues.
