Travelers heading for California first settled in the Rogue River, Oregon area. In 1851, it consisted of two cabins and a ferry across the Rogue River. Named Tailholt, the town had a small gold rush, farming and a timber industry. In 1872, the name was changed to Woodville after John Woods who established the town. Woodville Museum celebrates the town as documented in photographs by T.H.B. Taylor, a farmer who settled there in 1877. The town adopted the name Rogue River in 1912.
