Martin, South Dakota, is a small town of approximately 1,000 in the south central part of the state. Situated between the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and the Rosebud Indian Reservation, it is an agricultural and service-based community which celebrates its centennial in 2011. Martin has one hotel within the city limits, but lodging is also available on the nearby Pine Ridge Reservation or in the town of Gordon, less than an hour away.

Located approximately 48 miles from Martin, Gordon, Nebraska is the nearest major town, home to former writer Mari Sandoz, who wrote extensively about the area. Accommodations in Gordon include the Hacienda Motel, the Western Sands Motel and the Jefco Inn. All are on Highway 20. The Hacienda Motel includes a restaurant and lounge. The Western Sands Motel includes cabins, hunter and pet friendly accommodations, and food service. The Jefco Inn offers continental breakfast and includes conference rooms and a spa.
48 miles west of Martin along US-18 is the Prairie Wind Hotel, located in the Prairie Wind casino complex on the Oglala Sioux Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. This hotel is convenient to the casino and features standard guest rooms as well as Jacuzzi suites. In addition to the casino, the complex includes the Lakota Dome, a 21,000 square foot banquet and entertainment facility and a Convention Center with meeting rooms. The casino restaurant, Winds of Change, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and also provides banquet and catering services.
