Lake Dunmore is along the western edge of Branbury State Park in Vermont. The lake’s natural sandy beaches and clear waters make it popular for swimmers. The lake also offers opportunities to rent rowboats, kayaks, canoes and pedal boats.
The Chipman Inn lies to the north of Lake Dunmore in the mountains above Middlebury. The inn was built in 1828 and it includes a number of period features. Rates include breakfast and the inn has a lounge with a private bar serving beers and wine. The hotel has eight guestrooms ranging from singles to suites. Guests are not permitted to bring children under 12 years old. Pets are not allowed. Local attractions include Robert Frost’s cabin, the Ripton country store, the Sheldon museum and the Johnson art gallery.
Built in 1810, the Waybury Inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The hotel is to the north of Lake Dunmore and has 13 guest suites, four dining rooms and a bar serving domestic and international wines. Local attractions include fly-fishing on the Middlebury River, Middlebury College museum of art, Vermont Folklife Center and the UVM Morgan horse farm.
The Blueberry Inn lies to the east of Lake Dunmore at the foot of Romance Mountain in the Green Mountain National Forest. The inn was built in the early 1800s and has four upstairs rooms. Rooms overlooking the inn’s pond were built in 1987. A separate conservatory contains three additional rooms, each with its own loft. Nearby attractions include hiking trails, ski trails and swimming holes. The nearest town, Brandon, is 10 miles away.
The High Meadow Bed and Breakfast is to the east of Lake Dunmore on Goshen-Ripton Road. The three-bedroom cottage is near hiking trails, lakes and cross-country skiing. Guests are provided with a complimentary breakfast and custom lunch boxes are available. High Meadow offers wild mushroom and other edible food forays. Options also include wild apple cider pressing.
