The Fort Gordon Army installation is the home of the U.S. Army Signal Corps and Signal Center. The base, located just 10 miles south of Augusta, is named in honor of Georgia governor and Confederate general John Brown Gordon. Constructed in 1941, Fort Gordon contributes largely to the Augusta-Richmond economy, employing over 30,000 military and civilian employees. Lodgings are sparse in Fort Gordon, but there are a number of hotels and motels in neighboring Augusta.
